C5 would like to encourage all concerned citizens (we hope that means YOU) to participate in the comment process on a major permit presently before the DEQ to construct a "leachate concentrator" at the Ingenco plant in Charles City County. Ingenco converts landfill gas, which would otherwise need to be flared to prevent dangerous build up, into energy, which they sell into the PJM market. However, the proposed permit would allow the facility to emit significant quantities of particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide.
We think that careful community scrutiny into this permit is essential for air and water quality, and we really hope that you'll participate in the public information session (5:30 pm) and hearing (6:00 pm), Tuesday, January 18th, at the Government Administrative Building, Auditorium, 10900 Courthouse Rd. in
Charles City. If you want your comments to go on record, you'll need to sign up at the beginning of the session to speak. Please do! This facility, and the DEQ, need to know that residents are concerned about health and safety.
If you are uncomfortable with attending a public meeting, you are also able to participate in the public comment process by emailing the DEQ by February 2nd. Instructions and the email address are available here.
Thank you for advocating for clean air and water in Charles City County!
